March 2009: Cross-Disciplinary Responses to Climate Change

PanelDiscussionPoster

As part of SUS Green Week 2009, Greening McGill hosted a panel discussion on responses to climate change. The goal of the panel discussion was to re-examine the problem of responses to climate change from a cross-disciplinary perspective. Three panelists critically assessed the ways their disciplines conceptualize responses to climate change: Professor Eyad Atallah from the Department of Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences, Professor Jaye Dana Ellis from the Faculty of Law, and environmental journalist Stephen Leahy. Professor Peter Stoett, chair of the Department of Political Science at Concordia, had to cancel at the last minute due to injury. The panel discussion was followed by time for drinks and snacks and an opportunity to talk to presenters one-on-one.

February 2009: Power Shift 2009 – Washington, DC

In February 2009, Greening McGill and the SSMU Environment Committee coordinated a delegation of 14 McGill students to attend Power Shift 09, the biggest youth climate summit in the history of the USA. We rubbed shoulders with 12,000 youth from every state and province, listened to a stunning cast of speakers, and learned bold new skills through panels and workshops. Read more about the experience in the McGill Daily feature compiled by Greening McGill member Devin McDougall here.

Powershift 09 Canada Breakout

Regional breakout sessions helped to foster and organize youth climate mobilization at a more local level. Many of the youth who attended the Canadian breakout session are now involved in organizing Power Shift Canada (check out www.facebook.com/PowerShiftCanada and www.powershiftcanada.org).

November 2008: The McGill 100 Mile Diet

From November 8th to 22th, McGill students Tim Dowling, Aynsley Merk, Johanna Paquin and Ian Vogel challenged themselves to follow the 100 Mile Diet, eating only food grown and produced 100 miles (160km) from Montreal. They discovered where to find local flour, herbs, and oil, made outings to the local markets en masse, and reflected on the tastiness of good food and the difficulties of buying anything from restaurants. We celebrated their courage and successes with two delicious 100 Mile Potlucks. Read more about their adventures at http://mcgill100milediet.blogspot.com/ and the McGill Daily article here.
