Last fall we challenged four McGill students to only eat food grown and produced within 100 miles of Quebec for 2 weeks. This year we’re bringing back this local food challenge in a bigger and better form!

Why?

How much do we really know about the food we eat? When we go grocery shopping, the questions “where did this come from?”, “who were the farmers who grew it?”, and “how much fuel was used to ship it to Montreal?” don’t cross our minds. The goal of the challenge is to make people take a second look at what we eat, where it comes from, and the impact of our food choices.

How long?

For 1 month, dieters can only eat food grown and produced within 100 miles (16okm) of Montreal. Participants will be allowed 1 cheat item (choose wisely!).

What else?

We’re still in the early stages of planning, but we’d like to document the challenge- the trials and tribulations of the participants- as well as the state of local food at McGill and in Montreal. We’re also planning potlucks, workshops, and film screening to raise awareness about food issues.

If you’re interested in participating in the challenge or helping with this project, please email us at greeningmcgill@mail.mcgill.ca!

A) Opening thoughts:
• Greening Mcgill working group status has been reconfirmed!
• Still need to scavenge about 50 composting buckets for the Green Kits – will deal with then once the first 50 kits are sold.
• The Greening McGill meeting times will be changed to 6:30PM to avoid conflicts

B) New plans for this school year:
1. Continue with the 100-miles diet event:
• Idea of making a documentary of it and showing it at one of our own film screening events
• In collaboration with TV McGill perhaps? Liz will look into it
• Will try to start mid-October to beginning to November to avoid the deep freeze
• Extending the diet from 2 week to a month
• Need to contact possible dieters through the Greening McGill listserv as well as SSMU’s

2. Series of film screenings:
• Differently themed each week
• Get professors/Grad students or other parties interested in giving a short talk before the movie – a subject of their research or otherwise
• Provide free food (Organic Campus?) – will need to come out of the budget
• For next week: find a list of 5 movie suggestions paired up with professors
• Book room for movie screening: basement of SSMU

3. Selling Green Kits:
• Need to table more
• Selling at Farmer’s markets will continue every Tuesday
• Tabling at Leacock (ask AUS), Bronfman, Burnside, Y-intersection
